Exploring the Architecture and urban landscape in Tirana

Exploring the transformations of Architecture and Urban Landscape in Tirana.

This is a project that I started in 2008, in the outskirts of the city, nowadays transformed in high density neighborhoods. Over the years, the project was developed in different parts of the city, completing a puzzle on the urban landscape of Tirana, which is being transformed daily by urban migration and high levels of new constructions. Phenomena like gentrification, new urban neighborhoods, informal buildings, high rise constructions, closed enclaves in the rich suburbs, are now a norm. The premise of the photographic project is that the external form of urban structures is the physical manifestation of invisible forces of economic, social, political and cultural nature, which interacting with each other in different ways give the city the shape we see.

(an ongoing project)

The first part of the project is the Series “Exploring Modern Architecture in Albania”,  that includes a period of time 1920 -1940, that later influenced the post-war modernism in architecture. An important period in the history of architecture, that coincides with the development of the main Albanian cities ( Tirana, Korca, Shkodra, Durres, etc). The series “Exploring Modern Architecture in Tirana” is shoot mainly with large format 4x5” film camera. Later on, the series is shoot with 35 mm film, and some photos in digital as well.
